Robot Cells

A cell is the collection of one or more robots and their controllers along with the work piece delivery/removal mechanism within a controlled safety environment. The purpose of the cell is to service the robot with the work pieces and materials required in order for it to carry out its task and to provide safety for the operators by safely containing the equipment and their processes. The objects and materials are delivered into the cell and robot workspace, commonly via conveyor belt, and the robots then carry out whatever operations are required before the object is removed from the cell.

A birds-eye-view of an example robot cell is shown in the diagram below:

It is worth noting that the robot cell may contain more than one robot performing tasks and there may also be more than one conveyor if objects require sorting or if two parts are needed for assembly etc. The robot cabinet can also be placed outside of the security mesh and the control device could take the form of a PC, or indeed may not be there at all. Also the access door maybe some other form of monitored access.
